  Sewing Projects and Quilts

made by

Quilting is a hobby I have played with off and on over the years.

I have recently recaptured my enthusiasm for the craft, and will be making more new quilts soon.

I have the makings for three full quilts waiting to begin.  I recently purchased a new machine. Nothing fancy, just a basic machine, the Janome Memory Craft 3000. I love it!

Below are pictures of a few quilts and wall hangings and other quilted projects that I have made over the past 20 years, as well as some recent projects and works in progress.

There are two pictures of my sewing space at the bottom of the page.

Whew!  I finished the baby's quilt.  My Great Grand-Son is due to be born the end of next week.  Now I'm off to put it in the mail!

Quilt Front    Quilt Back

I designed the quilt using EQ-6

Boy am I glad to have this project finished!!  I began this quilt July 6, 2006 and finished it today, May 29, 2007.  Admittedly I was not able to work on it every day due to illness, but I had to put it on my bed today to see what it would look like.  It is a queen sized quilt.  Of course, Buster, my tail-less RagDoll cat had to help as usual.  Now I just have to wash it and remove all of the cat fur LOL  The quilt was designed by me, and made using fabric designed by Pat Sloan (the link to her web site is at the bottom of this page) for P & B fabrics.  The blue floral border and backing were purchased directly from Pat as I could no longer find it in the local stores.  Whew!  Thank you Pat!!  I tied the quilt as it has Natural Wonder Wool batting inside and is HEAVY!  It will be great for a winter quilt.  The wedding is July 15th, 2007.  I sure hope they will like it.   Now I need to finish a baby quilt for my first great grandson who is due to arrive next month in June.

Finished it, JUST in time for Christmas.... my Gingerbread table runner.

Latest project--- Ladybug Table Runner, Pattern and fabrics by Pat Sloan--link to her site is at the bottom of the page.  I will make the matching placemats soon.

I just love this  pattern.

Here is the matching placemat.  I made 4

This is using the pattern I designed for the quilt below, except I changed a few fabrics and made myself a wall hanging.  It still needs to be quilted, but the top is done.  Yippee!!

This was a project from Pat Sloan's Yahoo quilting group.  The design is by Pat Sloan (the link to her site is at the bottom of the page)

Needlecase project made from my scrap stash:

This was inspired by Pat Sloan's tote bag, but I needed a purse more than a tote, so I used "the best bag ever" pattern that i found at the "Clotilde.com" web site.  I did use Pat's "Brambleberry" fabric selections and love them. I will assemble it tomorrow.  When it is finished, I plan to make a matching quilted wallet.  Oh ya, I am putting a pocket on the inside to hold my pen and small note pad.  I can never find them at the bottom of my purse LOL.

The way is made, it can even be reversible.

 A current project-Flower Garden Quilt:

About 3-1/2 yrs ago I purchased a BOM quilt.  The Flower Garden Quilt offered by Newport Quilt company. http://www.newportquilt.com    I never found time to work on it until just recently.  So far I have the first two blocks done.        I am anxious to get it completed.  I just say I have made a couple mistakes but have managed to correct them by additional piecing.  My goal is to improve by the time I finish it LOL.  There are 17 blocks total. the fabric was included, but I still have      to cut templates to their patterns before I piece.  I am really enjoying this project.

Here are the first five bocks.

For my Best Friend-as a gift.  **she LOVED it! even with it's flaws.

I am making a "memory" quilt for a childhood friend, filled with reminders of our childhood growing up together.                     Below are some of the blocks I have finished.  There will be 56 of these "hand" blocks. I have hand stitched a blanket stitch around them.  Seven butterfly blocks.  The size finished of all is a 3" block.  There will be 12 different childhood fabrics  for the hands.  The butterflies will all be of the marbles fabric. I can't wait to get this one finished.  I am actually making two, one for her and one for myself.   There  will be  eight blocks of "Friendship quotes" and five blocks of "Photographs" of us as children together, and up through this year.   A total of 225 blocks in the quilt.  The quilt was designed using EQ-5  http://www.electricquilt.com/  I highly recommend this program if you enjoy quilting.  It is strictly a "designing" program.

The fabrics include:  Paper Dolls, Marbles, Jacks, Cowboys & Indians, Bugs in a jar, Hula Hoops, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, Lemonade stand, "You scream, I scream, we all scream for icecream", 45 rpm records, Lips (rep. wax lips), popcicles, and Bubbles.  I found most of these fabrics here:  Bighorn Quilts - http://www.bighornquilts.com/  and by searching Novelty fabrics online.  A.E. Nathan, Fabric http://www.traditions.com   and other sites.

I finally finished the quilt top.  I still have one more exactly like it to assemble, then I will put them together.  This will be a give for my childhood friend.  There is still a little hand sewing work to do and I have not quite decided just how I will actually quilt it, (design).  I like the way it came out though and am GLAD it's finally done.  Now, on to more projects!!

Here is the first of a gazillion letters.  I am leaving the blue out so the letters show up more.  There are 39 letters on EACH quilt, so that means a total of 78...Argh!   I have two done and 76 to go.

Today I did the letter D--four of them  Next time I use alphabet letters, I will make them 12" squares. LOL  What a job!

My  kitchen valance panels

May, 2006 - I made s new valance for my kitchen window.  They are 6" x 10" panels. The tabs originally began as bows tied over the rod, but they didn't look right to me, so I made them in to double tabs and put a small bow in the center of the checks. The top section is red/tan and green/tan checks.  The border is hunter green with small apples. There is a tiny bee on the leaf (single panel shown).  It was an accidental fussy cut.   The apples are a red/maroon color which is the same color as the tile trim in my kitchen..  previously, I had a balloon valance hung that I'd been staring at for over 12 years.  Wow, what a change. LoL  My kitchen is apples and roosters. This was made entirely from my scrap stash and was meant to be a weekend project, but it took me a week because I only worked on it occasionally.  the pattern is from "Debbie Mumm's Quick Country Quilts for Every Room"  I love this book.  The view you see is looking out my kitchen window.  We live in the country and love it.

My first quilt many years ago.

This is the first quilt I made.  There was no template, I just began cutting squares.   It is machine sewn, but tied, not quilted.

My Christmas Quilt

This is my second quilt.  It is seasonal.  It is made with patterns I got from watching the Quilt in a Day TV series with Eleanor Burns many years ago. This was so much fun to do, and I display it every year over the holiday season.

Country Angel wall hanging

This is a small wall hanging approx. 16" x 24" and was one I made in 1995.  There is a lot of appliqué in this small quilt.  It was a fun project.

Sewing Machine wall hanging

.

This wall hanging was another fun project, and my most recent.  It is machine stitched but hand quilted.  It hangs on the wall behind my sewing machine.  The finished size is 30" x 36"

A Family Heirloom in progress

Below is a quilt top made by my Aunt Muriel. The size is approx. 48" X 64".   She hand appliquéd the blocks but it looks like she machine quilted the sashing.  The quilt was never completed before her death.  The sashing between the blocks is 1" wide.   The finished blocks measure a tad over 14".  I am not positive about the era, but think it was the 30's.  The sashing is a drab olive green.   Below the picture of the quilt is a picture of 6 more blocks she made.  Looking at the sewing of the slashing, I do not believe she meant for the quilt to be any larger.  If the additional 6 blocks were added to the quilt top it would be VERY long, and they could not be evenly put along the sides.    She had requested that any one who inherited the quilt finish it for her.  It was her desire to have it hand quilted.  I ended up with the quilt, which I love and will hand quilt it as soon as I figure out weather or not to add the additional blocks.  After I have enjoyed the finished quilt for a while, I will present it to her Granddaughter.

Flag Curtains

These curtains hang in our computer room.  I made them for my husband, who spent 25 yrs in the military. He asked me to make them as if the flag were hanging on end which is why they look out of sync.  We made the computer room his military memorabilia room.  His metals and photos are on all of the walls.  It's "his" space.

MY STUDIO

I recently moved my sewing things into my "studio"  (I call it my studio--it is our livingroom that we never use so I have set up my paints, scrapbooking and now sewing equipment.  i LOVE it.  I have a rain lamp (already hanging and too heavy to move) that was my parents, and there is a waterfall beneath it on the table. It's very relaxing.  The left side of the room is ALL windows so the natural light is awesome.  You can see out the window that overlooks our back yard and the open land behind us.  On the right I have room to leave my cutting table up and THAT is fabulous!
